40-30-30 Software
Before I introduce my software, realize that it is not to be condsidered
"official Zone Diet software." This means that it is not endorsed by
Eicotech Corporation. If you are looking for official Zone Diet software
you need to visit Eicotech.
I must also make known the fact that this software will not run on all computer hardware and software platforms so please read the following before you download anything.
System Requirements
You will need any one of the following:
- An IBM PC or compatible running Windows and Excel version 5.0 or greater (note that Excel is a part of Microsoft Office but NOT Microsoft Works).
- An IBM PC equipped with Lotus 1-2-3 (version 2 or greater), Quatro-Pro (up to and including version 4 but NOT beyond), Excel (version 4) or any other early "Lotus compatible" spreadsheet program.
- A Macintosh running Excel version 5 or greater.
If your system does not meet the above requirements you can still use my on-line meal planner and on-line profile calculation programs (see below).
And now, without further ado....
This is where you may download free 40-30-30 software! Both ZoneBuddy and Zone Pro are available here.
I've written these applications with versions for three different environments:
Excel v5.0 - If you are running Microsoft's Excel version 5.0 (or greater) on either an IBM or a Macintosh this is the environment to use. Here, the software is written as program driven Excel workbooks and it is by far the best of the three options. The files that you will use have an .XLS extension.
Lotus 1-2-3 - If you are using spreadsheets like Lotus, Quatro Pro 4.0, Excel 4.0 or some others, the applications you need are written as script driven spreadsheets. The files that you will use have a .WK1 extension. Note that you may have to substitute CTRL for ALT if you are using Windows.
On-Line - If you are lacking the proper software to run ZoneBuddy and Zone Pro as spreadsheet applications (or if you just want a sneak peek at what they can do before you download them) I have written on-line versions of each which work with practically any web browser. Just click here for ZoneBuddy On-Line or here for Zone Pro On-Line.
Things you need to know before downloading
- The files offered here are written as spreadsheet applications. They are programs that actually DO something, not merely files to be viewed. This means that you will have to have a good spreadsheet program to run these. Excel, Lotus and Quatro Pro are some that should work. Microsoft Works and Claris Works will not.
- You have several download options. If you elect to receive files in zipped form, they must be unzipped by applications or plug-ins like PKzip, WinZip, Shrinkwrap or Unstuffit before you can use them.
ZoneBuddy
Due to its rather exacting nature, the Zone Diet can be a little frustrating for some when it comes to meal planning and recipe creation. With lots of math involved and a fair amount of trial and error, this can be a little complicated. I quickly realized that the hours spent planning a new recipe or meal could just as easily be spent writing a program that would make it really simple. So I did that.
What I've created are spreadsheet applications that I call "ZoneBuddy". These allow the user to assemble a list of ingredients along with their nutritional values. From this list, block values are automatically calculated for each food in both its normal serving size and in the amount that you wish to use. Furthermore, total blocks and calories for the entire meal/recipe are displayed. This easily cuts my meal planning time down to a few minutes. By simply plugging in new values for the amount of each food in the list, one can instantly see the effect on the protein/carb/fat ratio.
So far I've received fantastic response to this software (as well as puzzled queries as to why it's free). I appreciate the feedback I get and if you choose to use ZoneBuddy I'd like to hear from you too.
Zone Pro
Now you can generate 40-30-30 profiles for practically anybody! With a few body measurements this spreadsheet takes care of the tedious calculation and gives you a daily intake recommendation. This is a must for anyone starting on a 40-30-30 diet plan!
The instructions are included as part of the application for fast and easy start up. Also, I spent a great deal of time developing a different method for calculating body fat percentage so this can be done for extreme cases that are not covered by the charts in Barry Sears' book. The only down side of this is that a very small percentage of men (myself included) still fall off the bottom end of the body fat percentage scale. My rule of thumb is to cheat the percentage up to 3% by tweaking the measurements.
ZoneBuddy and Zone Pro for the Excel 5.0 environment
ZoneBuddy for Excel is now up to version 3.3 but since this one
is not yet available for general distribution, version 3.2 is offered
here for download. It comes as two files, zb32u.xls (the actual
spreadsheet application) and zb32.doc (the documentation).
Now available is a 1000 food database for ZoneBuddy (Excel version only).
If you are using versions 3.2 or 3.3 then you will be able to import this
database (versions 3.21 and 3.31 already have it).
To download, select a column to determine the download style. The
"ready to use" column will be easiest but may not download on some browsers.
The "zipped files" column will require an archive program like PKZip, WinZip,
Stuffit or Shrinkwrap which MUST be used to produce the ready-to-use files.
The "self extracting" files will only work on the PC and must be run from
either the "Run Menu" or the MS-DOS Prompt" (and this will produce the
ready-to-use files). If your browser displays garbage or doesn't download,
try another column.
If the following table looks too confusing,

Notes:
- In case none of the columns work for you, all of the
files in the "ready-to-use" column are available via FTP.
Point your FTP program to ftp.goodnet.com/users/l/len
and download the files of your choice.
- If all else fails --- E-mail me,
tell me which files you want and I'll e-mail them to you. Please be sure to
specify "Excel" version.
ZoneBuddy for the Lotus 1-2-3 environment
ZoneBuddy and Zone Pro for Lotus is not nearly as powerful as what I've written
for the Excel 5.0 environment but it is a whole lot better than nothing!
This one will run in Lotus (all versions as far as I can tell) and on
older versions of Quatro Pro and Excel and a few other spreadsheets.
It will NOT run in Quatro Pro 5, Microsoft Works or ClarisWorks.
The files you need to run the Lotus version of ZoneBuddy are zonebud.wk1
(the actual spreadsheet application) and zonebud.doc (the documentation).

More software is planned and as it becomes available and tested, I'll put it here. As always, your suggestions are welcome and encouraged and if this helps you out, let me know via E-mail.
